Shueitai has been in familiar use in Japan as a standard typeface for over 100 years, and this application is a record of the typeface development undertaken in the Shueitai renewal initiative, called The Project to Renew Shueitai for the Heisei Era. The application offers an introduction to the 7-year typeface development process involving 120,000 characters in 10 different typefaces, beginning with the challenges presented by Shueitai prior to renewal, through how designers improved the typeface, to the precise experiments conducted by engineers in order to convert Shueitai into a commercial reality. In the Shueitai renewal initiative, called The Project to Renew Shueitai for the Heisei Era, that DNP has undertaken since 2005 as part of the celebrations for the 130th anniversary of the founding of the company, we have carried out development with an awareness of the existing usage environment and user needs, with the intention of passing down this high quality typeface to the next generation.
