Wicd is an open source wired and wireless network manager for Linux which aims to provide a simple interface to connect to networks with a wide variety of settings.

Network manager used by Linux distributions Sidux and Aptosid, but can be installed on debian based distributions, and compiled from source on just about any.

wpa_supplicant is designed to be a "daemon" program that runs in the background and acts as the backend component controlling the wireless connection. wpa_supplicant supports separate frontend programs and a text-based frontend (wpa_cli) and a GUI (wpa_gui) are included with wpa_supplicant.

rfkill is a small tool to query the state of the rfkill switches, buttons and subsystem interfaces.

KPPP is used to setup PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connections. This is most useful for connecting with a cell phone "modem" card these days. It is also use to configure real modem connections.

WvDial (pronounced "Weave Dial") is an easier way to connect to the internet. It completely avoids the need for chat scripts, edits pap-secrets and chap-secrets for you, detects your modem automatically, and chooses a valid init string. It can even read and respond to command prompts at almost any ISP.
